Have you ever had trouble searching for something on our site because you've received too many search results? Well, things have become a lot easier thanks to our new "exact phrase" search function.

Let's say you're looking for the boy group WaT. Last week you'd select "People" from the pull-down menu, type "WaT" into the search box, and get over ten pages of results featuring "WaT," DJ Watarai," and fifty or so different people with the last name "Watanabe."

This is called an "inclusive" search because your search results include every entry that includes the word "WaT." Believe it or not, this is usually the sort of search you want. Let's say you're looking for "Miles Davis," you might also want "Lee Konitz & Miles Davis" or the "Miles Davis Quintet." Inclusive searches are convenient in almost every case.

. . . Every case except short names like "WaT." Well, all that has changed thanks to our new "exact phrase" search function. By searching via "exact phrase" you can receive only the results that exactly match you're entered phrase. That means "WaT" without the "Watanabe," and "UA" without being told you've received too many results.

How do you "exact phrase" search? the search bar at the top of each of our pages now has three pull-down menus: "People," "All," and "Contains." Click on the "Contains" pull-down, select "Exact Phrase," and search! And if you like the search as it was, the system defaults to "Contains" (the original inclusive search) so you don't have to use "exact phrase" search if you don't want to. Yay!

"Exact Phrase" also works with our other search functions like "Album/Movie Titles" and "All," so if you've had trouble sifting through too many search results, defintely give it a try.

Nice feature
The new "exect phrase" option is a great improvement. I don't use it that much right now but it is indeed really good to search for that exact CD/DVD when you know the the title/name.

The more "random" search option is still really good. Like you mentioned it is often better to get all the possible resuls as I found out that some titles aren't always listed in the categories you would expect them to be in.

Great
Hi, this is indeed some improvement.
Unfortunately I have to say that the cdjapan's search engine is one of the worst I use.
For example a search of "hamasaki ayumi" yields completely different results from "ayumi hamasaki".
And because of that I found myself always searching everything in any way possible.

It should give the same results for both searches (and listing first the way it was typed).
So searching for words separated by spaces like "tamaki nami" and "nami tamaki" and giving the same results would be indeed a big improvement.

Overall I think that the searching, and how items are categorized needs a complete overhaul.

Thanks, and to tell you the truth, I agree with you Takeshi. Especially with artists like Hikaru Utada or Ringo Shiina (<--and trust me I had to learn to type like this) where most people know their names last-name-first, our search engine can be difficult to use.

We definitely plan to fix our search engine in the future. However, it's going to take some time to get our search engine to behave. In the meantime we're adding smaller things like the "exact search" function so that it's not completely unbearable to use our site.
