Warning: Those who are eating right now should not read this.

I am sorry that I chose this topic for today but I wanted to introduce Japanese toilets. I also didn't want to use "Toilet" in my title so I chose WC to make it a bit obscure. To my surprise I have heard many people dying to get Japanese toilets so I guess our toilets are different from the world.

There are 2 types of toilets in Japan. Both types of toilets are found in mostly all public bathrooms in Japan nowadays.

One is a Japanese type where you have to squat down. I won't go into further details because I don't want to gross anyone out. There is nothing special about this one and many foreigners have trouble using this type so please don't challenge if you come to Japan.

The other Western type is basically the same type you guys use everyday...except for a couple functions. I don't know if these kind of toilets exist outside of Japan. I apologize if these are actually normal in your country.

For example the toilets in CDJapan automatically opens the lid when someone comes in, the toilet seat is heated so you won't jump up in the cold winter. (This is what seems to impress foreigners the most) There is a control panel on the toilet wall with many functions to it like water-squirters, water-massages, blow dryers, flushing noises and so on. Speaking of flushing noises, I realized when I came to Japan that many people always flush the toilet when they are ...you know what, because I guess they don't want anybody to hear anything.

I never experienced that overseas. So most Japanese toilets have a button that makes a sound--sometimes it's just a flushing sound, sometimes it's a bird chirping sound. Then finally it automatically flushes when the person stands up and the lid closes. We shall call these "the lazy toilet".

But there still exists many toilets where we have to flush ourselves. Another feature that is only-Japanese for the, I shall call "the manual-toilet" is that we have a sink on top of the toilet. It might sound disgusting at first but it's actually recycling water. The water comes out when the toilet is flushed and we wash our hands with the clean water and then the water goes down to the tank and is used to flush.

If anyone comes to Japan, please try to find one of our "Lazy toilets".

Note: Those who were annoyed with our "Translation Icon" following your mouse everywhere, you can now get rid of it by clicking the "X" on the right corner.

I apologize about that. I know my blog readers do not need any translating functions because you are all fluent in English.

I love Japanese toilets(yes, it's not something to shout out loud xD)!!! They give you that...warm feeling *_* The flushing sound is a bit creepy xD
I don't know if other countries have those kind of toilets, but certainly NOT Italy _
Amusing post!

Toilets outside Japan are BORING and... COLD >_<

It's so nice to sit down and feel that warm sensation that also contributes to the process you're going to do ;)

I'm dying to get back to Japan this year to enjoy the Toilets again (I know it sounds strange xD)

The first kind of toilet is also widely used around Turkey, called "alaturca toilet". It's similar to Japanese, only slightly different in design :)

Elenora>Hmm...It's interesting that you think the flushing sound is creepy. But I guess it is also weird that Japanese women think that the tinkling sound is embarassing. It should be normal.
ZeusII>Please enjoy are toilets! We are improving every year! I heard some toilets even speaks and greets the user!!

Hi Fulya>You also have the squatting toilet? Well some people do prefer the squatting type in Japan because they don't want to share the same toilet seats with others.

Je,je,je... Mana. Great blog about the toilets(lazy toilets and a toilet that talk to people? = SUGOIIIII!!!): Japanese are always improving in technology and other rare things. I WANT TO BE IN JAPANNNN someday... Agh!
In my country there are not continuous improvement but lately has reached to market a super economic and fast toilet that avoids waste of 13 liters of water when you flushes it(this is the amount of wasted water in most of our bathrooms in C.R.) so, in times of crisis like these is good to save as much as possible, don`t you think Mana? I know Japan is affected by the crisis, too.
P.S. Talking to crisis I need a favor of you or Toshi, Mana. It is possible if you put my combined coupon in the actual order(it is not in shipping process until April) For me it`s impossible but not for you. PLEASE...

Japanese toilets are amazing! Though I only saw pictures. I don't think anything you said was gross or weird or anything like that. It's a normal thing for people to do right? ^^ It was quite informative! Thanks for this post. :)

Reminds me of Die from Dir en grey. XD he said something along the lines that he had difficulty going to the toilet when they toured in the U.S. Well, these kind of toilets are part of your culture so I don't think it's something to discriminate. It's nice to see that some people know how to appreciate cultural differences and respect them. I hope you can write more posts about the Japanese culture in the future. I plan on working in Japan myself after I graduate from University. :)

Thanks for this information. I visit Japan often, and my experience is that it's just as you have described. My wish is that high standards of cleanliness be observed at all times.

Hello again (^_^)
Yes, the toilet is slightly alike.
It does feel safer but at very places in Turkey they do not look as clean as western toilets in my point of view.

That is how a Turkish toilet looks. Rather than on the floor, the place to put feet are also designed into the toilet.

These kind of things and similarities makes me think that Turkey and Japanese are alike. In culture sense too, the history is strangely similar.

Interesting choice of topic Manababy. Off topic, but any chance you could do a search link to show items 'in stock' for any given heading (music, anime, movies etc) as it's always nice to find something I want to buy that's in stock. Means less waiting time for delivery, and we can ask specific questions about the item. Just a thought. Keep up the great work. I'm off to the WC.

Fulya>Turkish toilets are so much like ours!! BTW, there are many turkish kebab selling trucks in Tokyo recently. And they are so good! I always have to stop and get one. Also turkish ice-cream was popular in Japan for the past few years too! Thank you for the great invention.

Ines Marie> You are coming to Japan? Well please ask me anything you are curious about and I can write about that in my blog.

ibr remote>Thank you for visiting Japan! Yes, I hope that we could stay clean 10 years from now too!

Damon M>Thank you for your suggestion. So you mean you want the search engine to be able to show only items in stock right? Yes, I also think "Out of Stock" items are pretty annoying when there are too many items shown for your key word. Am I getting you right or did you mean something else? Tell me when ur back from the WC (^_^)
