Summer Moments
Jul 24,2009
Hi!
Does it feel like summer where you are?
I am surely feeling the arrival of summer.
What kind of events or things remind you of summer?
I think watermelons, pool and fireworks probably reminds everyone of summer no matter where you are from. So today, I'd like to share some summer moments when Japanese feel the arrival of summer.
* When Cicada Bugs Sing
Usually in other countries, bugs are thought as annoying creatures.
But as for semi (cicada), Japanese consider their sound as beautiful and greatly appreciate their existence. They are a part of Japanese culture, appearing in many poems too.
* Japanese Style Noodle (So-men)
So-men are thin noodles dipped in sauce.
We eat a LOT of so-men during the summertime when we loose our appetite from the heat.
* High School Baseball Tournament
This nationwide event takes place in the summertime.
Senior students compete their last summer tournament before they quit and start studying for university exams.
* Yukata (Japanese traditional Summer-Wear)
Yukata looks mostly like a kimono but is made in a lighter material, only worn during summer.
Some foreigners still think there are ninjas and samurais out there in Japan but sadly the answer is no.
But if anyone wants to see Japanese wearing traditional clothes for free, summer is the best time because many people go to summer festivals and firework shows wearing yukata. And that time is the closest we get to the olden days.

What a beautiful traditions you have in Japan!!. Very cute. In my country the arrival is for winter season and this means: flu, flu and more AH1N1 cases, so we have in RED ALERT. Last weekend, we had one more week of vacation for this red alert and the Health Ministry suspended one of our most major religious traditions that for centuries was done to prevent the masive infection of more than 2 million pilgrims.
Ah! I will like to see one day summer festivals for fireworks and yukatas.
P.S. Ninjas and samurais alive? In our times? This would be funny... Je,je. Maybe in a MUSEUM!!

Since summer so far has been pretty mild, it's going to feel like summer from now on. I like mild summers.
Ooh!!! High school baseball tournament!!! I heard about that. Motohiro Hata is doing the theme song for that tournament. (Oh and thanks for adding the artist list for him :) )
I wanna try on a yukata!

We (the Netherlands) usually only have firework on New Year's eve, so they don't remind me of summer at all, haha.
I saw some Cicada bugs in Suzumiya Haruhi. Didn't know they are associated with summer :)

Ken 007> That's the same for us too! Many people get the flu in the winter time in Japan too. Every year, I always hear someone say the flu spreading out this year is the worst type of flu ever. I always tend to believe that at first, and then realize that people have been saying that for like the past 10 years.

Jen> I'm happy that you noticed that we added the list for Motohiro Hata.
And yes, he's gonna sing for the tournament!! It's kind of like a girl's dream in Japan to be the manager of the baseball team and your boyfriend's baseball team to win this famous baseball tournament.

I admire places where there are fireworks during the wintertime.
Japan barely has winter fireworks. I am a firework freak so I'd die to see fireworks during the winter!!

In my country, it is Summer all year round. If only we can have seasons as well...I love Japan's Summer Matsuris, and my country does organize a mini one every year. :)

Asprah>Well I admire you then because I wish it was summer all year round. Winter is so boring for me, all we talk about is how freezing it is.
