Japanese Traditions
Dec 26,2008
Hello everyone!

Since it's the end of the year, I will write about Japanese New Year's traditions.

Around the end of the year in Japan, most families spend a whole day cleaning out their houses to start off a new year in a clean environment.

We eat noodles around midnight on new year's eve. The long noodles symbolize longevity.

It used to be a tradition watching Kohaku Utagassen, a music program. The hot artists of the year separates into 2 teams while they compete by singing.
But recent years, a kick boxing competition began to air on the same time and the young generation started to watch that show instead.
The kick boxing competition is starting to become a new tradition while the music program viewing rates are going lower and lower.

On new year's day, children receive money from their relatives called Otoshidama.
Families gather around to eat a traditional Japanese new year's breakfast called Osechi.

Even though Japanese are mostly atheists, many go to shrines on new year's day to make a wish and draw a fortune paper called "Omikuji" to see their luck for the new year.

Thank you for reading my blog this year.
I will try to improve my blog, with more interesting topics next year.

If anyone has any ideas, I beg you to give me some.
Because all of you have one thing, Japan in common.
I'd be more than happy to offer you good Japanese information to my blog readers.

Enjoy the rest of the year.
Have a happy new year!

Oh! Yeah! You have right Mana. Japan have traditions but I didn`t knew had so many in New Year: Noodles?, Osechi?, Otoshidama?, Omikuji?, Ohhhh. I only think in Kohaku Utagassen program(no more). Thank you for let us know more about your cute culture.

So, you need new ideas for the blog? Well, talking about traditions I will like to learn more about japanese traditional dances(or more traditions specially the most important). In my country only see chinese dances all side but not japanese.

P.S.1- I`m ready for rhinestones tips Mana, so.. express your great ideas(I gave the gift to my sister and she likes it so much. Maybe she`s more smarter than me. Je,je).
P.S.2- How was your "Omikuji" this year?
P.S.3- Your real is... Jasmine - Mana? and your last name is also very nice!!

Ah! I forgot it! Thank you so much for the Kohaku list 2008, but is so sad to notice Morning Musume, Berryz and Cute don`t fugure in none of the 2 teams : *sniff*,*sniff*.

And don`t worry about the blog: all make mistakes!! The problem is now solved. Je,je

Ah! I forgot it! Thank you so much for the Kohaku list 2008, but is so sad to notice Morning Musume, Berryz and Cute don`t fugure in none of the 2 teams -*sniff*,*sniff*. (This was a bad year for my girls).

P.S.1- Who is Nozomi Ohashi girl that had the great honor to be invited in the kohaku program?
P.S.2- Do you know why NHK not selling out DVD`s of Kohaku like Hello Project? if it is a program so popular and traditional?

And don`t worry about the blog: all make mistakes!! The problem is now solved. Je,je

Hi Ken,
Sorry about the block on comments!
And here are my answers!
***Rhinestone tips***
I think for beginners, you should start off with something with a flat surface. Another tip is to not put too much glue. Small dot of glue will do fine. Drop a dot of glue on the surface, then place the rhinestone on top. Once you push the rhinestone down, the glue will spread out more than you think!

***Omikuji***
Actually I live like 2 minutes from a very famous shrine so I haven't gone to see my luck yet because it's pretty ridiculous to go line up for hours at new years when I can go there anytime!
Maybe sometime this weekend!

***My Name****
How come you know about "Jasmine"?
No, my real name is Mana but I use Jasmine as a pen name a lot!

***Ohashi Nozomi***
Ohashi Nozomi is the girl singing the theme song for "Gake no Ue no Ponyo" which is Miyazaki Hayao's latest anime movie.

This song was playing ALL summer, everywhere!!!

***Kohaku Utagassen****
It is hard to make a DVD for Kohaku Utagassen because since there are way too many artists participating in that show it is too difficult to acquire all authorizations from all artists.

Lastly, thank you for ideas for my blog!
You are right. I don't think many people know about Japanese dances.

Good idea.
