Coming of Age Day
Jan 15,2010
January 11th was a holiday called "Coming of Age Day" in Japan.
It is a celebration for those who have reached 20 years old.
They are gathered to local city offices and are congratulated and encouraged by the mayor. The ceremony is a bit like a reunion because we bump into old elementary school friends and old teachers. They get to see what kind of adults everyone had turned out to be.
The majority of girls wear kimonos and boys wear either a suit or a hakama. It is the day that we can see the most kimonos.

After the ceremony, the young adults go out to drink and party.
However, there has been disruptions to some ceremonies in recent years.
The new adults have not been behaving as adults at the ceremonies.
Nowadays, it is almost a little tradition to see which prefecture had a riot that year on the news.
