5 Japanese Fun Factors
Aug 28,2009
I chose 5 fun factors I wanted to share with my blog readers.
1: Hiding Thumbs in Front of Hearse
There is a saying in Japan that you will not make it to your parent's deathbed if you don't hide your thumb when you see a hearse.
Thumb is Oya Yubi in Japanese. Oya means parents and yubi means finger.
Hiding the thumb means to protect your parents.
2: Triple Car Light Flash
We flash our car lights three times as a thank you when someone lets you in when making a lane change while driving. And it looks like this is an only-Japan thing.
3: Mayonnaise Pizza
It is normal in Japan to have mayonnaise, corn, potatoes and even boiled eggs on a pizza. But I noticed that many people are surprised when they see the Japanese style pizza.
4: Salty Watermelons and Tomatoes.
We sprinkle salt on watermelons and tomatoes to make the sweetness stronger. I always thought that was a lie but I finally tried it a couple years ago and I understood what others were trying to say. It does taste sweeter!
5: Toilet Slippers
This is probably famous. You will find a pair of slippers for toilet use only. If you ever encounter this situation, it is polite to place the hole of the slippers towards the door so the next person can put them on easily.
5 Japanese Fun Factors Comments
The Japanese Pizza sounds tasty lol.
About the Triple Car Light Flash, in Europe they usually just use a hand gesture to thank the person.
Salty Watermelons and Tomatoes. I should really try this.

Interesting! I'll definitely try to sprinkle some salt on a watermelon some time.
Speaking of fun, any idea of when the 2010 calenders will become available?

I can imagine eggs on a pizza but I don't even like mayonnaise and potatoes, so this pizza would be a no-go for me.

Barrie V>Be careful not to sprinkle too much salt! Just a little makes the sweetness come out. At first it tastes just salty and then the sweetness comes out.

Bobby>Yes, personally I love it. There are so many variations at Japanes pizza stores. Usually more than 20 to choose from. This might also be very unusual but my favorite is teriyaki chicken pizza.
