Semishigure

Semishigure

The classical-era Japanese love story "Semishigure" is coming soon to DVD. Based on the most respected work out of author Shuhei Fujisawa's catalog (also responsible for the story to last year's sublime samurai film "The Hidden Blade"), tells the story of love, friendship, and utter impossibility that surrounds the samurai Maki.

Maki is played by kabuki actor Somegoro Ichikawa, known for his lead roll in the film "Ashura-jo no Hitomi." After years of practice on stage, Ichikawa's performances, both vocal and with a katana, represent the epitomy of Japanese high art. Director Mitsuo Kurotsuchi contrasts the vividly realistic swordplay over breathtakingly beautiful shots of the changing seasons of old Japan, creating an artistic piece that reminds the viewer of the essentiality of nature in traditional Japanese art.

Preorder the "Semishigure Premium Edition" DVD release, coming April 14. Set includes the feature film as well as bonus disc with 60 minutes of making-of footage, interviews, and more!
