OU812 was Van Halen's answer to David Lee Roth's "Eat 'em and Smile". A lot of fans don't like this album, I've even heard this called Van Halen's worst, which I couldn't disagree with more. People complained about there being too many ballads, but man... there are some of Van Halen's hardest rocking songs on this album too! Sucker in a 3 Piece, Black and Blue, AFU/Naturally Wired, Source of Infection... these tracks rock! Even a keyboard song like Mine All Mine has a dark edge to it that is as far from a ballad as you can get. Plus, Cabo Wabo, my favorite track on the album, is a heavy pop song that rocks. Sucker in a 3 Piece has one of the best intros to any Van Halen song in the band's history. My point is, if you've been avoiding this Van Halen release because you've been told it's full of love songs and ballads... give it a chance, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how heavy this album gets in parts. There's not a dud or skippable track to be found here either, it's all killer no filler. While the album is very diverse musically, somehow all the songs work to create a cohesive vibe over the entire record. Plus, the 24bit/96kHz sound quality on the MQA layer and new remastering has this album sounding better than it ever has before. I love the high quality mini LP packaging too.
