Description

What did the record keeper who writes the final moments of fallen comrades as "heroic deeds" in letters truly see? A friendship story amid the flames of war based on historical fact, where war turns paradise into hell. A new milestone in war manga is finally adapted into a theatrical animation film! The original comic, while drawn in a cute style, depicts with overwhelming realism the madness of a world where war is everyday life and receives the Excellence Award at the 46th Japan Cartoonists Association Awards. Rihito Itagaki voices the protagonist Hitoshi Tamura, and Tomoya Nakamura voices his reliable partner Keisuke Yoshiki. The theme song is "Kiseki no Yona Koto" by Mone Kamishiraishi. In 1944, toward the end of the Pacific War, on the beautiful southern island of Peleliu, there is a 21-year-old Japanese soldier named Tamura. Aspiring to become a manga artist, Tamura is recognized for his talent and assigned a special duty: serving as a "record keeper" who writes letters to the families of fallen comrades describing their final heroic moments. On September 15, the U.S. forces begin their assault on Peleliu Island. More than 40,000 elite American troops attack, while the Japanese forces number only 10,000. Repeated bombardments, endless gunfire, and the agonizing cries of soldiers that remain stuck in their minds echo throughout the battlefield. Comrades standing beside them die in an instant, and in extreme conditions where death may come at any moment they face unbearable hunger, thirst, and infectious diseases. Gradually cornered, the Japanese forces are even forbidden to charge to death and are forced into a desperate war of endurance while severely wounded, merely trying to buy time. Tamura writes about the deaths of his comrades, sometimes mixing in lies to turn them into heroic tales, without truly knowing what is right. Supporting him is Yoshiki, a dependable private first class who enlisted at the same time as him. Encouraging each other and sharing their suffering, the two develop a special bond. Each soldier has a life and family waiting for him. None of them wants to die. They simply want to return to the people they love. In the end, only 34 Japanese soldiers survive. In this harsh and cruel world, Tamura and Yoshiki struggle desperately to stay alive. What do these two young soldiers witness on the battlefield of madness? Video extras include a super teaser, teaser trailer, main trailer, and a 15-second spot. Audio extras include a commentary track for the main feature. A bonus disc (approximately 80 minutes / containing event footage, web spots, character PVs, and a digital gallery *still images), and a booklet are enclosed. Special W bookcase illustrated by the original creator Kazuyoshi Takeda.
*Rated 12-and-over.
