Shunji Iwai - The Kon Ichikawa Story

What happens when one of the top names from modern Japanese cinema takes on the life of one of the most influential names from Japan's golden era of film? "The Konichikawa Story" from Shunji Iwai is what, and it's coming out now on DVD with English subtitles.

Created in conjunction with the release of director Kon Ichikawa's latest film (and remake of his 1972 film) "Inugamike no Ichizoku," "The Kon Ichikawa Story" sees "Hana and Alice" director Shunji Iwai look back on over 90 years of the life of Kon Ichikawa. Of particular emphasis are Ichikawa's seldom discussed early years in animation, Ichikawa's experience of World War II, and the love story between Ichikawa and wife Natto Wada which lead to some of the most memorable movies in the Kon Ichikawa portfolio.

While director Shunji Iwai is already known as one of the top director's in modern-day Japan thanks to his sharp eye for life and creative style, "The Konichikawa Story" sees Iwai applying his sensitive filmmaking to one of his cinematic idols (the original "Inugamike no Ichizoku" being highly influential on a young Shunji Iwai).
