Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Loft

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Loft

Master horror directors are like master magicians, they can show you their cards and still suprise you in the end. Kiyoshi Kurosawa is one such master and "Loft" is his latest trick.

While "Loft" is billed as Kurosawa's long-awaited return to horror, inside this story of mummies, a grotesque search for beauty, and murder lies an equally worthy homage to films passed. Each element of the film is an archetype: the strong yet fragile heroine, the silent and charming guy next door, a viciously former lover, and a sad, gorgeous, and ever building string soundtrack. The joy of "Loft" is not in how these elements serve to pierce through the horror atmosphere with heroine-carrying 1950s romance, but how Kurosawa then cuts his hommage back down with smirky, black horror-humor.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Loft" stars Miki Nakatani ("Kiraware Matsuko no Issho"), Etsushi Toyokawa ("Nihon Chinbotsu"), and the most impudent winch you've ever seen. "Loft" was released February 9, 2007.
