Beethoven: Lieder & Folksongs

The year 2027 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Ludwig van Beethoven, a major milestone. This acclaimed recording of Beethoven's songs and folk-song arrangements, made by British star tenor Ian Bostridge with Antonio Pappano, who is also active as a conductor, joining him as pianist, arrives as an SACD hybrid. Bostridge and Pappano explore Beethoven as a song composer with innovative and delicate sides. With deep intelligence, outstanding expressiveness, and a musical approach, they shed new light on Beethoven's songs, letting listeners rediscover their value and appeal anew. The album opens with "An die ferne Geliebte," the first song cycle in music history, in which Bostridge's fresh and delicate interpretation was highly praised, and continues with rare songs and arrangements of Irish, Scottish, and Welsh folk songs. For the string parts of the folk-song arrangements, the world-class players Vilde Frang (violin) and Nicolas Altstaedt (cello) take part, delivering lively ensemble playing together with the piano. This release is part of the Lumiere series, delivered as high-sound-quality SACD hybrid.
