Mary Lou Williams was an exceptionally inventive pianist, composer and arranger who, after her ardent conversion to Catholicism, wrote some of the most beautiful religious jazz ever penned. Some of that musi--both solo and choral--is on this magnificent album recorded in 1962. Just listen to "Praise the Lord," with Budd Johnson's belting tenor sax and Grant Green's funky guitar. This is the best jazz sanctus I've ever heard, with incredible poetry by Williams herself. Besides her absorbing originals, Williams plays standards here, also. This is an album you will be grateful to have discovered. And the price is impossible to refuse.
