18世紀フランスで活躍したヴァイオリニスト、作曲家サン=ジョルジュ。父はプランテーション(大規模農園)を営む地主、母はプランテーションで奴隷として働いていたウォロフ族出身の女性であり、優れた音楽の才能を持っていましたが、母の血をひいた証である黒い肌のため、当時は大変な苦労を強いられたようです。彼は、ルクレールにヴァイオリン、ゴセックに作曲を師事、当時フランスで活動していたオーケストラ「コンセール・ド・ラ・ロージュ・オランピック」のコンサートマスターを務め、ハイドンに「パリ交響曲」の作曲を依頼するなど目覚ましい活躍をしましたが、ルイ16世のヴェルサイユ王室楽団のディレクターに指名された際、激しい人種差別を受け、断念せざるを得ませんでした。またフランス革命勃発時には1000人の黒人兵士を率い、戦闘に参加するも、結局は軍を追われます。古典派の様式に則った作風から「黒いモーツァルト」と呼ばれるサン=ジョルジュ、その波乱万丈な生涯を、映像では前述のエピソードも交えながら丁寧に解き明かしていきます。音楽を担当しているのはターフェルムジーク・バロック管弦楽団で、サン=ジョルジュの代表作「ヴァイオリン協奏曲」を始め、師ルクレールやゴセックの作品も網羅。興味ある映像に仕上がっています。付属のCDでは使用された音楽全曲をお楽しみいただけます。
