Haydn: Die Schoepfung

Haydn's great oratorio "The Creation" drew the biggest response at the Salzburg Festival in 1990. Haydn poured his whole being into this work in his later years, composing it to a German text that Baron Gottfried van Swieten translated from an English libretto based on Chapter 1 of Genesis and Milton's "Paradise Lost". It begins with the Chaos of Part 1 and depicts the four days of creation by God, then in Part 2 living creatures appear one after another, and in Part 3 it unfolds on a grand scale up to the birth of Adam and Eve at last. In addition to the supple and finely detailed conducting of the young Riccardo Muti and the full, elegant sound of the Vienna Philharmonic, the solo singing by five of the finest singers of the day, Popp, Araiza, Ramey, Baer, and Vermillion, is overwhelming, and it brings out the strength of the work and its brilliance as a hymn to humanity to the fullest. It is the record of a performance that can truly be called a grand hymn dedicated to all people.
