      Original 1959 version 5

This is a classic album from 1959, which was a great year for Jazz. This album was overshadowed by Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, but is a great album. It refers back to many of the jazz artists of the past such as Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington, but is very forward thinking. Mingus created jazz workshops to develop ideas for compositions allowing his band to add to and complement each others work in order to create a coherent piece of music. However the sound that results allowed for improvisation within the composed pieces. The music kicks off to a great start with "Better Git it in your Soul" with Mingus shouting "Oh my lord" as the band goes through a gospel inspired piece. Their follow a wide range of moods that stop off at several points of jazz history. Please note that this is the original album format. Six of the nine tracks were shortened in order to fit onto a vinyl album. The original longer recordings were finally released in 1979 and have appeared on several releases since, along with unused music from the same sessions.
