Billy Joel continues to get the deluxe treatment with these 7" mini-LP SACD releases. I have all the previous releases and was thrilled to see Billy's first album get released in the same format and packaging. This release is loaded! You get the album on SACD in stereo and surround sound 4 channel quad mix (fantastic), a Blu-spec CD and a DVD with lots of video and live footage. The premium 7" mini-LP packaging looks great and it contains a ton of memorabilia from the album's initial release, which was a lot of fun to look thru. I enjoyed seeing the various Japanese obis they included. Needless to say, the DSD master used to make this release is as close to owning the master tape as we'll ever get. The sound is dynamic, with perfect instrument spacing and details. Again, the surround mix is the highlight here and it sounds like Billy is playing live in your home. A definitive release for one of Billy Joel's best albums, get this before it's gone, you won't regret it!

The 4-channel SACD layer is a high-quality surround mix of the quadraphonic LP analog 4-channel mix master source, mastered in DSD for the first time at Sony Music Studio in Japan. The 2-channel SACD layer is a high-quality stereo mix newly DSD-mastered from the analog 2-channel mix master source, and the CD layer is a newly mastered source converted from the SACD DSD master to PCM.
In addition, DISC2 (high quality Blu-spec CD2) contains many unreleased demos and rare live recordings from the "Piano Man" period, including 7 songs that have never been released on CD before. DISC3 (DVD) contains rare live/music video footage, including eight songs that have never been released on DVD before.
Plus, this set comes with a US press kit from 1973, a "Piano Man" Japanese 7inch single jacket, 4 types of reissued replicas of Japanese LP obis, and other rare memorabilia. 7inch cardboard sleeve packaging with lyrics and a description.

I already have this album as the regular issue and the U.S special edition release. Both are good but yet again Japan proves that with a little more attention to detail you can have something very special. The CD side is fantastic showcasing Billy Joel's expertise as a singer and songwriter but when you go SACD well, there is a warmth that pulls you further into his world, you are there right in front with your glass of tonic and gin wrapped in the music that speaks through the ages. You can even hear the actions of the piano as he plays away. What else is there to say? Beautiful.
There is much music for price. The Quad SACD version is worth the price of admission alone. But, there is much more and all in high resolution. To top it off, great memorabilia. So much stuff. The release is 13mm thick. So save some shelf space. Highly recommend this collectible release by a great artist.
