Mahler: Symphony No. 2 (1973/74 Lso Recording) / Symphony No. 8 Part 1 / Symphony No. 5 Vi. Adagiett [Limited Release]

[Tower Records x "Sony Classical" Ultimate SA-CD Hybrid Collection, 14th Release] Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) left behind numerous recordings of Mahler, all distinguished by his passionate devotion to the composer, meticulous analytical insight, and powerful expressive force. Of the three works on this album, his second recording of Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" was made in 1973, six years after he completed his first Columbia cycle of Mahler's symphonies. It was recorded in connection with concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra at Ely Cathedral in England, a historic cathedral built between the 11th and 14th centuries. The performance was also filmed, and this recording has become virtually synonymous with Bernstein's interpretation of "Resurrection." The climax of the fifth movement was recreated in Bradley Cooper's 2023 biographical film "Maestro," bringing renewed attention to the performance. This marks its first remastering in 34 years. Also included are two memorable live recordings: Part I of Symphony No. 8 from the inaugural concert at Philharmonic Hall in 1962, and the Adagietto from Symphony No. 5 performed at the 1968 memorial mass for Robert F. Kennedy. 2-disc SA-CD Hybrid set / Onsho label specification / multi-case / wraparound obi / includes lyrics and Japanese translations.
