Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.2 & 4

ドイツの名手ラルス・フォークトが自らロイヤル・ノーザン・シンフォニアを指揮し、ベートーヴェンのピアノ協奏曲を演奏するツィクルス、最後を飾るのは第2番と第4番の組み合わせ。ベートーヴェンが16歳の頃に着手したとされる第2番の協奏曲は、第1番よりも以前に書かれた作品。ベートーヴェン自身は作品の出来に不満があったとされているが、主題の扱い方や、独創的なカデンツァなどにベートーヴェンらしさが感じられる意欲的な曲として高く評価されている。第4番はベートーヴェンの最高傑作のひとつであり、第5番「皇帝」が堂々とした男性らしさを誇る曲であるのに比べ、こちらの第4番は柔和な表情を持ち、中でも第2楽章の憂いに満ちた美しさは格別の人気を誇っている。フォークトの演奏は、どちらの曲もオーケストラを雄弁に鳴らすことで"ピアノとオーケストラの対話"を強調。これまで伴奏として見過ごされがちだった第2番のオーケストラ・パートにも隅々まで光を当てることで、曲の新たな魅力を引き出すことに成功している。
