His late symphonies with a mystical atmosphere and "Cantus Artix" with birdcalls are much loved by many people, but the "Works for Cello" on this album were not performed very often and have lain dormant for some time. The Sonata for Solo Cello, composed in 1969, and the Two Preludes and Fugues from 1955 are the foundations of Rautavaara's chamber music composition technique, and have a fresh, neoclassical style. 2016年、惜しまれつつこの世を去ったフィンランド屈指の現代作曲家ラウタヴァーラ。神秘的な雰囲気を持つ後期の交響曲や、鳥の声を用いた「カントゥス・アルティクス」などの作品が多くの人に愛されていますが、このアルバムに収録されている「チェロのための作品」はあまり演奏されることなく、ひっそりと眠っていました。なかでも、1969年に作曲された「独奏チェロのためのソナタ」と1955年の「2つの前奏曲とフーガ」はラウタヴァーラの室内楽における作曲技法の基礎を成す曲であり、新古典派風の作風による新鮮な味わいを持っています。その後に着手された「ソナタ第1番」はモダンな様式が用いられていますが、すぐに完成されることはなく、30年の逡巡を経てようやく書き上げられた作品です。「わが心の歌」は自作の歌劇《アレクシス・キヴィ》のアリアが元になった曲。他にもさまざまな作品を、ターニャ・テツラフとグニッラ・シュスマンが親密に歌い上げています。
