Animation AKIRA Storyboards 2 (OTOMO THE COMPLETE WORKS 22)

The animated film version of "AKIRA" was released in theaters in 1988 and has revolutionized the world of animation beyond the realm of manga. This book is the second volume of a two-volume collection of storyboards drawn by the original author and director, Katsuhiro Otomo himself, for the production of the anime version. This book contains the second half of the four parts (A, B, C, and D) that make up the entire film, as well as new elements such as previously unreleased cuts and the author's own commentary pages. The storyboard of this book was started after the author stopped the serialization of the original manga version "AKIRA" around 1987 to make the movie version. The old storyboard collection published by the Young Magazine editorial department in 1988 in both upper and lower volumes went out of print after a short period of time, and the lower volume, which is the latter part of the storyboard, was particularly difficult to find.

1988年に劇場公開され、漫画の域を超えてアニメの世界までも革新したアニメ映画版『AKIRA』。本書は、そのアニメ版を製作するにあたり、原作者であり監督でもある大友克洋自身が自ら描き上げた、膨大な量の絵コンテを全2巻にまとめたものの第2巻にあたる。映画全体を構成するA、B、C、Dの全4パートの後半「C・Dパート」を完全収録した上、これまで未公開だったカットや著者自身による解説ページなど、新しい要素も本書には追加されている。1987年頃、原作漫画版『AKIRA』を連載中だった著者が、映画版製作のためにその連載を中断し着手したのが本書の絵コンテだけに、連載並みのテンションで描かれたメカや背景の緻密さやキャラクターの躍動感は漫画本編に勝るとも劣らない。なお、ヤングマガジン編集部から1988年に上下巻で刊行された旧版の絵コンテ集は短期間で絶版となっており、後半パートにあたる下巻は特に入手困難であったが、本全集にて30年以上ぶりの復刻が実現。遂に完全仕様での入手が解禁となる。ぜひ著者の驚異的なアニメ製作術に触れていただきたい。なお、書名の「Storyboards(ストーリーボード)」とは「絵コンテ」の英語表記である。 ※「OTOMO THE COMPLETE WORKS」第22巻
