The American release of Kongou Kyuubi was my first exposure to this band. The first thing I noticed is the excellent vocals of front woman Kuroneko. The songs vary from hard driving rockers like Kuzaku Ninpouchou to the softer ballad Doukoku. Kuroneko fits her voice to each song, rough to silky smooth. This CD includes a song trilogy with the standout track Tamamo no Mae that would sell anybody on Kuroneko as a top level vocalist. The songs themselves have good melodies and some great hooks. The band relies heavily on standard heavy metal formats, 4 to the bar and major cords. The guitar solos are well done but predictable. This CD is still in heavy rotation with me, it is just enjoyable to listen to. If you are any fan of female fronted metal and want something different then buy this CD. Be warned though, this is a very Japanese band, all the lyrics and liner notes are in Japanese. There are some resources that will provide translations for every song and additional band info. Check for onmyozatheatre.com. to get some links for this. Once you get deeper into the stories these songs are about you will find another world of myths and legends. Well worth the effort.
