後期ロマン派の時代、クロアチアで活躍した作曲家ベルサ。残念ながらその存在はほとんど忘れられてしまったが、ウィーン音楽院作曲科でロベルト・フックスに師事したという彼の作品は、マーラーやリヒャルト・シュトラウスを思わせる色彩的な響きに満たされており、室内楽作品や歌曲の何曲か現在でも演奏されている。彼は数多くのピアノ曲も作曲しているが、これらも多彩な表情を持った抒情的な作品が多く、すっきりとした形式の中に、時には教会旋法も用いるなど工夫の凝らされた旋律が溢れている。リストのパガニーニ練習曲で冴えた技巧を披露したクロアチアのピアニスト、ゴラン・フィリペツが格別の愛情を込めて演奏している。
