音楽愛好家の父を持ち、幼いころから音楽の才能を発揮したヴィアナ・ダ・モッタ。1875年から1881年までリスボン国立音楽院でピアノと作曲を学び、その翌年ベルリンに留学。フランツ・リストの最後の高弟となったことで知られている。ピアニストとして一世を風靡した後はポルトガルに戻り、リスボン国立音楽院の院長を務めながら、ポルトガルの伝統音楽と近代様式を融合させた作品を数多く作曲した。このアルバムでは、ドイツ後期ロマン派風の様式による「ベックリンによる2つのピアノ小品」と「幻想的小品」、ポルトガルの伝統に則った「5つの狂詩曲」を収録。色彩豊かな音楽を楽しむことができる。
