One day, Maud learns that Everett, a fish peddler, is looking for a housekeeper, and she decides to become a live-in housekeeper to gain independence. Maud has suffered from severe rheumatism since childhood and has been treated as a nuisance, while Everett grew up in an orphanage, has no education, and struggles to survive. The two outcasts have a troubled life together, but gradually they find their way to each other and eventually get married.
