Anne's son Pierre, who has been entrusted with the executive director's position, is not a businessman at all. Anne's younger brother Thomas is a doctor who has not taken over the family business, and he and his young wife Anais have a young son, Paul. The family sits around the same table and eats together, indifferent to each other's thoughts and feelings; they only share their individual secrets and resentments on social networking sites and e-mail. In the midst of this family, Haneke sheds light on the reunion between grandfather Georges and his estranged granddaughter Ev. The aging grandfather, who pretends to be a blur when he is not pleased with the situation, is actually quite perceptive of Ev, who wears the shadow of death around her. On the other hand, Ev, abandoned by her father at an early age, starved for love, and haunted by death, is also looking at the world with a wary eye.
