      Disappointing 2

L was released to much (Avex-generated) fanfare; it was Ayu's first triple a-side since 2003's &, her landmark 50th single, and featured compositions by J-pop legend Tetsuya Komuro. All things considered, I expected more from it. As it stands now, it feels like the tracklisting was unnecessarily padded to match the giant career milestone it represents. I believe that under any other of circumstances, “Last Angel” would have been the sole a-side. "Last Angel" is far and away the best track on the single with its interesting melody and arrangement. Although not the best song she's recorded--or the best song she released in 2010--it's a great piece that fits in with the rest of her discography without feeling like a retread of what she's already done. The other original songs, "Virgin Road" and "Sweet Season," don't fair as well. "Virgin Road" is the usual, melodramatic ballad we've come to expect from Ayu, elevated by a spectacular video that is not included in this package. It isn't bad, but it isn't anything special, either. "Sweet Season," on the other hand, is one of the worst songs Ayu has recorded; for an artist known as much for her unique melodies as her heartfelt lyrics, "Sweet Season" is just plain boring; more than any other song, it should not have been included on a career-defining 50th single. This particular version of the single comes with two bonus "orchestra versions" of songs from her 49th single: "crossroad" and a cover of TK's "SEVEN DAYS WAR." I decided to pre-order this version based on the beautiful, orchestra-backed performance of "crossroad" on MUSIC STATION prior to the single's release. Unfortunately, the "orchestra version" of "crossroad" exclusive to this edition of the single did not live up to my expectations. Retrospectively, it would have been better to wait for the (excellent) Love songs album and skip this single altogether.
