From the first volume of his Madrigale, published in 1587, to the eighth volume in 1638, Monteverdi spent half a century pursuing new compositional techniques and styles. La Fonteverde, who was growing in maturity, sings in exquisite harmony the fifth volume, in which the transition from Renaissance to Baroque becomes clear with the addition of string instruments such as sinfonia.
