Mayr: Venetian Solo Motets

[Machine Translation] The 18th century flutist Joachim Kwanz wrote a brief definition of the Italian motet in one of his articles. According to this definition, a motet consists of "two Latin arias and a recitative of religious content, concluding with a hallelujah (praise be to God)," but in reality, the recitative may be omitted or the aria added. The most representative example is Mozart's "Exultate ubilate K 165," but there are many others. Many of the motets were written for girls living in the Ospedale (charitable orphanage) in Venice. Maile made fine adjustments for each singer's voice, and his works seem to have been very popular among the singers. However, the C minor motet at the end has a power and darkness that overwhelms the rest of the work, and there is no Hallelujah in praise of God, although the second half is a bit brighter. This is a full-bodied performance by Meir's scholar, Hauck.
