リストと言えば"ハンガリーの作曲家"のイメージがありますが、実際には両親はドイツ系の移民であり、本人もハンガリー語を話すことは出来ませんでした。しかしリスト自身は"ハンガリー人としてのアイデンティティ"を生涯大切にしていました。波乱万丈の生涯を送ったリストでしたが、年を取るに従って健康が悪化、その上、自身の祖国と認識していたハンガリーからも拒絶されるなど最晩年は決して幸せなものではなかったようです。しかし作品には自由度が増し、晩年の「忘れられたワルツ」やいくつかのチャールダッシュなどは、調性からも脱却、現代にもつながる前衛性を備えていることで知られています。ここで一連の作品を演奏しているのは、リスト作品で高く評価されているクロアチアのピアニスト、ゴラン・フィリペツ。鮮やかな技巧で難曲を弾きこなしています。
