Strong songs and strange videos 3

After the release of Microphone I was really looking forward to this album as it was promising to be something rather exciting, and I wasn't let down. All the singles released from this album had been to my liking and the rest of the album turned out to be just as enjoyable, but not one of Ayu's best as whole. While the album has its highlights and songs I really love, it also has songs that feel like fillers and are somewhat forgettable. count down, Last Links, meaning of love and Lady Dynamite are songs which I just don't find myself returning to; they are not bad songs, but the other songs on the album are just so much stronger in comparison and they outshine any of the more mediocre pieces and leave them in the shapeless pile of i-cant-remember-what-this-is. On the other hand the strong songs on the album are really Strong with a capital s. Microphone was a killer song to pick as the grand opening (well, after the intro that is) and I still love how it's slightly reminiscent of Ayu's GUILTY era. The lyrics are brilliant, the music and singing dramatic and while I'm not a fan of rock music the rock-esque vibe here works wonderfully. After such a grand performance the slow ballads SUNSET~Love is all~ and BALLAD are soothing and easy to listen to. Both of them also have good videos, BALLAD telling a story of love lost in a tragic way and SUNSET being more mellow and peaceful with its summer evening aesthetics. After these enjoyable love songs I found Last Links to be bit of a letdown, but then Don't look back is definitely one of the best pieces on the album with its oriental melody and Ayu's haunting vocals that match the video perfectly. While rather subtle, the video is very well executed and has an interesting catch at the end. I didn't know what to expect from Sexy little things with a title like that, but it turned out to be my very favourite from the whole album. The lyrics are witty and catchy, something I always find myself singing along to and it stands out from the album more than the rest. Other very enjoyable songs are SUNRISE~Love is all~ and You were..., which has become one of my personal favourite Ayu ballads after its release. I also have only good things to say about RED LINE which has inspired some negative feedback from Ayu fans in general for being plain, generic and who knows what. I found it to have a very enjoyable chorus and music - it was the perfect ending song for this album and leaves me smiling each time. I did enjoy how the album doesn't really focus on any specific genre despite being named Rock'n'Roll Circus, but has a variety of different types of songs. As for the DVD, I'm still at two minds about the obvious Lady Gaga inspiration on the videos of Microphone, Sexy little things and You were... While I'm also a Gaga fan, it seems so unnecessarily obvious what inspired the videos that I'm not really sure if it's good or not. It probably does not come as a surprise to anyone that these three videos all had the same director, so this strangeness could be all thanks to the director's vision. Whatever the case, I just can't help but feel that the Ayu on these videos isn't really Ayu at all so I can't enjoy them as much as I'd like to. The songs are great on their own though, and You were... works rather better as a video than the other two since it's more subtle in the strangeness thanks to being a ballad and the eccentric lightshow and costumes doesn't feel so out of place in a powerful, emotive song. Rest of videos however are good and solid Ayu quality, and the making-ofs for SUNSET and SUNRISE are unusually fun to watch since the filming of both was a live event. This album really did leave an impression on me even though it's not one of Ayu's best albums to date. It has many excellent songs but the overall score drops thanks to too many average songs and videos too weird for human comprehension. Still, I do recommend it since the good songs really are that good but perhaps getting the CD only version would save you from the double takes and rock'n'rolling your eyes in disbelief. If Gaga+Ayu works for you then this version might just be your cup of tea. It probably wasn't mine, but it's not so tragic since the DVD is just a fancy extra for me and I buy Ayu's releases for her music and music only. That being said, I did love the poster that came with the First Press. It was to-die-for gorgeous.

      Stunning and Awesome 5

The album is really good and the PVs are visually stunning. I highly recommended this album to Ayumi Hamasaki fans and casual listeners.

      Ayu still has it! 5

RnRC is definitely a surprise even after NEXT LEVEL. She never ceases to amaze me. The songs sound random at first, but the trick is to listen the album with an open heart. The lyrics, styles, and creativity flow nicely once you understand that the "rocknroll" is just her music and the the circus is the "fun & diversity" of songs. I personally loved all the songs. They provide something new and exciting especially after NEXT LEVEL. What will she bring to the table next?
