I was 8 years old when this series first premiered on TV in Japan, and I even remember the day I watched Episode 1. Its been over 20 years since I've seen this series, and I must say - it is indeed a masterpiece. The strength of the characters, the compelling story and the beautiful music all contribute to making this series one of the best anime of all time. It would be a shame for younger generations of anime fans to not give this series a look due to some bias against 'older' anime. The soccer matches are VERY well-staged - much better than what I've seen in recent soccer-based anime (even with the help of CG). 1980s anime tended to focus more on telling good stories - that was where the focus tended to be placed. This series does very well in capturing what was truly magical about anime from that era. I'm very happy I bought this.
