      Electrifying Tchaikovsky Fourth! Pre-Release Comment

At long last, Herbert von Karajan's electrifying 1971 EMI recording of the last three Tchaikovsky symphonies has been remastered at 96HRz and 24-bit. Hopefully, some if not all of the distortion found on earlier CD releases will be greatly reduced. If not, these performances are very worth hearing. In terms of sheer intensity, Karajan never surpassed these 1971 recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker. This Tchaikovsky Fourth Symphony is, by far, Karajan's most intense performance on record. As with the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, there is less emphasis on beauty of sound and more on emotion and animal-like impact at climaxes. Ensemble is not always immaculate and the second movement is not as well paced as in Karajan's superb 1976 DG recording (available from CDJapan coupled with the Serenade for Strings). But the other three movements offer high-voltage playing with Karajan's characteristic "grip." Highly recommended for both Karajan fans and anyone who loves Tchaikovsky's awesome Fourth Symphony!
