In the most dramatic scene, Act II, Scene II, "The Palace in the Land of Sweets," Leslie Corea, the confectioner, and Anthony Dowell, the prince, perform a brilliant duet. The story takes place in 19th century Nuremberg, where a young girl, Clara, receives a nutcracker as a present from her godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer, a mechanical doll maker, at a Christmas party. The doctor's nephew is locked inside the nutcracker, but when he emerges from the nutcracker at midnight, he defeats the Mouse King, and Clara falls in love with him. Drosselmeyer restores the nephew to his original form and takes him and Clara on a magical journey to the land of snow and the land of sweets. Recorded at the Covent Garden Loyal Opera House, January 1985.
