故郷、東北の地・民を守るために戦った、若き英雄の物語。舞台は古代日本。東北地方の平定を目指す朝廷軍の襲撃に、命を捨てて一族の未来を救った古代東北の英雄・阿弖流為(アテルイ)の生涯を、空前のスケールで描く冒険巨編。 ■＜前編＞ 奈良時代末期、東北には「えみし蝦夷」と呼ばれた一族が暮らしていた。日本全土を支配下におさめようとする大和朝廷(ヤマト)の手が、東北にも伸びてきた。胆沢(現在の岩手県奥州市)の族長の息子、阿弖流為は、ヤマトに連れ去られた妹・阿佐斗を奪還すべく、元は蝦夷でありながら今はヤマト側についている呰麻呂や母礼とともに、ヤマトの拠点である多賀城を襲撃する。妹の奪還には成功したが、蹂躙のショックから妹は記憶喪失となっていた。ヤマトへの怒りを募らせる阿弖流為。一方、再び蝦夷側に戻った母礼は、ヤマト軍の更なる進撃を予測する。交戦を決意する阿弖流為は非戦派の父親・阿久斗を説得し、族長となって蝦夷軍を率いる存在となる。 ＜後編＞ 延暦13年の大戦を奇跡的に制した蝦夷軍であったが、戦争のために豊かだった山や川は荒廃してしまう。故郷の自然を何よりも愛する阿弖流為にとって、そのことは大きな禍根となった。しかし、戦争をやめれば、自分たち一族は蹂躙されてしまうだろう。阿弖流為の戦争に対する葛藤は深まる一方であった。延暦18年の戦いは、かろうじてヤマトの進行を食い止めたものの、蝦夷軍も大きな被害を出した。次第に人心は離れてゆき、孤立を深める阿弖流為。しかし、阿弖流為は、少しでも多くの民を逃がす為に、命をなげうつ覚悟で最後の戦いに挑む。阿弖流為は、盟友・母礼とともに、宿敵ともいえる坂上田村麻呂と対峙する。
