An ironic title for a band or for that matter, an album, as the band never became big stars nor did their album hit no. 1! The brain-child of chief songwriters Chris Bell and Alex Chilton, #1 Record was the culmination of their love for the British 60's rock invasion. Sounding like an amalgam of the Beatles, the Kinks and the Byrds, Big Star released their debut album at a time when 3-minute pop-rock songs were no longer in vogue (this was in the early 70's when progressive rock and the singer-songwriter movement was prevalent). Add to that poor distribution and a lack of publicity, the album never took off. What a shame as the general public missed out on a gorgeous-sounding rock album. Songs like Feel and The Ballad of El Goodo are power-pop classics, while In The Street was reworked by Cheap Trick for the theme song of That 70's Show. This cardboard sleeve edition is the only way that you can get the album on its own (it is available as a two-in-one with their 2nd album as a regular CD and/or SACD in the US and Europe). Big Star's debut deserves to be widely heard - songs that come from the heart are hardly written anymore.
