Jordan Rakei is a Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer, and one of the leading figures on the current UK scene. He has collaborated with artists including Common, Tom Misch, Lizzy McAlpine, and FKJ, and his talent has been praised by both Sam Smith and Gilles Peterson. In 2024 he released his major-label debut album "The Loop," and in Japan his collaboration track "Celebrate" with STUTS also became a major talking point. His Japan tour, performed as a double bill, was also a great success. This release is his new album, arriving two years after that one. The recording process was carried out without setting any particular rules, with an emphasis on freedom, experimentation, and being unguarded. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and at his home studio, where he first made around 50 demos at Abbey Road, then refined them at his home studio to bring them to their final form, ultimately recording 20 songs over two weeks. Of these, the 14 tracks included on the album turn out to be, even by Jordan's own account, a remarkably varied showcase of sound, including "Bomb," with strings reminiscent of John Barry, "Enemies," which evokes an homage to 1970s soul and funk, the dark electronica of "Mirror," recalling Bjork and Autechre, and "Pub," with a simple, catchy melody that feels just right. As he himself put it, "I was finally able to express my true self," and the album is one where he has distilled his own unvarnished self into music. Jordan commented on the album, "Before, I felt pressure to live up to expectations and reviews. But now, with a child born and the dream of a Royal Albert Hall show come true, I have a new goal. This is the start of chapter two of my career. I can now reflect every side of myself in my songs without worrying about fear or what other people think. I have been able to get back to how I felt at 13, just enjoying making beats alone in my room. I do not care anymore what people think. And I hope that through this album, listeners will feel all kinds of emotions, because I am singing about my family, the people I love, and my own anxieties.
