WINDFLOWER [SHM-CD]

Ayumi Tanaka, a pianist active in Northern Europe who made her ECM debut in 2021 with the album "Subaqueous Silence -Mizu Hibiku-," returns with her third work overall and her second for ECM, her first in five years. Unlike the regular trio with Christian Meaas Svendsen (b) and Per Oddvar Johansen (ds) who joined her on the previous work, this album was recorded with a new trio featuring American bassist Thomas Morgan and Norwegian drummer Thomas Stronen. The three players, familiar to fans versed in the musical leanings of ECM, shape the music together, weaving abstract and lyrical ideas into pieces that carry a flow and an energy influenced by chamber music, jazz and Eastern, Western and Nordic sensibilities. The title "Windflower" refers to the fleeting anemone, which in many cultures symbolizes the transience of beauty and suggests the need to capture and cherish the moment. On this work a free ballad quality is brought to the fore, and the music shines through eight improvisationally composed pieces and a free arrangement of "La Source," a composition by Ayumi Tanaka. For Tanaka and her fellow players, the means of creation are secondary to the end. "I want to compose music that sounds improvised," she says, and she also states, "and I want to improvise music that sounds written...".

2021年にアルバム『スベイクエアス・サイレンス -水響く-』でECMデビューを果たした北欧で活躍するピアニスト、田中鮎美の5年ぶりとなる通算3枚目 (ECM第2弾)の作品が登場。前作で共演したクリスティアン・メオス・スヴェンセン (b)、ペール・オッドヴァール・ヨハンセン (ds)というレギュラー・トリオとは異なり、本作は米国のベーシスト、トーマス・モーガン、ノルウェーのドラマー、トーマス・ストレーネンによる新たなトリオでの録音。ECMの音楽的傾向に精通するファンにはお馴染みの3人の奏者が、室内楽やジャズ、そして東洋、西洋、北欧の感性から影響を受けた流れとエネルギーを帯びた楽曲の中で、抽象的かつ叙情的なアイデアを織り交ぜながら、共に音楽を形作っている。タイトルの"Windflower"とは儚い風花 (アネモネ)。は、多くの文化において美の儚さを象徴し、その瞬間を捉え、大切にする必要性を示唆している。本作では、自由なバラード調が前面に押し出されており、8曲の即興的に作曲された楽曲と、田中鮎美の楽曲「La Source」の自由なアレンジが織りなす、輝きに満ちた音楽が特徴。田中と共演者たちにとって、創作の手段は目的よりも二次的なものである。「即興のように聞こえる音楽を作曲したい」と彼女は語り、「そして、書かれたように聞こえる音楽を即興で演奏したい・・・」とも述べている。
