All fourteen studio albums carefully re-mastered with a nice booklet to boot. Pink Floyd have always been big on the design front of things (the Immersion Boxset of 'Dark Side' is indeed a thing of beauty). Now to the music. These new re-masters seem to have taken their cue from the recent Beatles re-issues in that not much compression appears to have been used so the Everything-as-loud-as-everything-else syndrome that mars a lot of re-mastering these days is not present here. This i'm sure has been welcomed by many opposed to the 'Loudness War' of modern re-mastering. There is some extra volume on these new masters but that's to be expected with the better techniques available today and the overall sound is not compromised. What's missing from this box-set of course is the 'Relics' album which hoovered up some of the stray songs flitting about the Floyd canon (though not all) aswell as some early A and B-sides.Unfortunately this means this set is incomplete. Will they appear on a special compilation later? Lets hope so. If you are a fan of Pink Floyd there is really no excuse not to own this. Even if you don't like every album they made there is usually at least one track worthy of your attention. ( the much-hated Atom Heart Mother contains 'Fat Old Sun' for example). This box set is a wonderful tribute to the artists brilliant on the CDS. I think they are the greatest group on earth.This will bring pleasure to any true fan for years to come.
I received my box the other day & while I love the sound quality of the 2011 remastering, the presentation, packing & booklet really left a bad impression with me. I paid about $450US to get the Japan version because the North American version has discs pressed in Mexico & while the sound quality did not disappoint (especially Obscured By Clouds, wow!!), basically everything else was a huge disappointment. No obi's for individual albums, cheap booklets for each individual album,& a medium size booklet with some outakes from each album photo shoot really added no value. No bonus tracks or unreleased material is present, no new info or essays from band members, no new concert photos etc. etc. really make this a lost opportunity to do something really great for fans of Pink Floyd. Everything about this box screams cheap except for the price which certainly is not budget priced. Corporate greed on the part of EMI is to blame I suspect, looking to cash in one more time on a great legacy of some of the best recorded music in the history of rock. If you have the money & love most or all of Floyd's music get the Japan versions solely for the outstanding sound quality otherwise just stick to the domestic box or buy individual albums that are your favourites. Fans of Pink Floyd deserve better. The band should have demanded more but I guess caved in for one more big payday. How about a Blu Spec release of this box,now that would be something to get excited about!!
