Huge amounts of oil and gas are discovered in the North Sea, and the government embarks on a project to open an oil pipeline 500 meters under the sea. Petter and Knut, two of Norway's leading professional divers, are selected as the main divers for the project. Just when everything seems to be going smoothly, an incident occurs. During an experimental dive, the younger brother Petter faints, and his mistake costs the older brother Knut his life. Unsatisfied with the explanation given by the upper management, Petter begins to investigate the truth of the incident on his own. He soon discovers a big conspiracy hidden behind the project...

海底500mで何が起こったのか! 『ミレニアム』シリーズの製作陣が贈る深海スリラー!! デビュー作『インソムニア』がハリウッド・リメイクもされた、鬼才エーリク・シャルビャルグ監督最新作! 2013年度トロント国際映画祭正式出品作品。――80年代前半、石油ブームに沸くノルウェー。莫大な石油とガスが北海で発見され、政府は海底500メートルに石油パイプラインを開通するプロジェクトに取り掛かる。ノルウェーを代表するプロのダイバーであるペッターとクヌート兄弟は、このプロジェクトのメインダイバーに抜擢される。全てが順調に進んでいると思われたその時、事件が起こる。実験ダイブ中に弟ペッターが気を失い、彼のミスで兄クヌートが命を落としてしまう。上層部の説明に納得がいかないペッターは、自ら事件の真相を調べ始める。やがて彼は、このプロジェクトの裏に隠れる大きな陰謀を知ることになるのだった・・・。
