Carol of the Bells

Directed by Olesya Morgnetz-Isa enko, a female director living in Kiev, Ukraine! --In January 1939, a Ukrainian and a Polish family move into the main house of a Jewish family in Stanislawow, Poland (now Ivano-Frankiewsk, Ukraine). Yaroslava, the daughter of Ukrainians, is a good singer, influenced by her musician parents. She sings a Ukrainian folk song, "Shedlik" = "Carol of the Bells," believing that singing it will bring her happiness, and sings it at important occasions. After the outbreak of World War II, Ukraine was invaded by the Soviet Union, invaded by Nazi Germany, and occupied again by the Soviet Union. Polish and Jewish parents are separated by persecution, leaving behind their daughters. The three daughters, Dina, a Jewish girl, and Teresa, a Polish girl, live with their Ukrainian mother, Sofia, a singing teacher, who tries her best to protect them.

なにがあっても、生きる。第2次大戦下、領土を奪われ翻弄されるウクライナ、ポーランド、ユダヤ人の3家族が大地と子どもたちを守り抜こうとする運命の物語。ウクライナ、キーウ在住の女性監督・オレシャ・モルグネツ=イサイェンコ監督作品! ――1939年1月、ポーランドのスタニスワヴフ (現ウクライナ、イヴァーノ=フランキーウシク) にあるユダヤ人が住む母屋に店子としてウクライナ人とポーランド人の家族が引越ししてくる。ウクライナ人の娘ヤロスラワは音楽家の両親の影響を受け歌が得意で、特にウクライナの民謡「シェドリック」=「キャロル・オブ・ザ・ベル」は、歌うと幸せが訪れると信じ、大事な場面でその歌を披露する。第2次大戦開戦後、ソ連による侵攻、ナチス・ドイツによる侵攻、再度ソ連によって占領される。ポーランド人とユダヤ人の両親は迫害によって離され娘たちが残される。ユダヤ人の娘ディナ、ポーランド人の娘テレサの3人の娘たちをウクライナ人の母であり歌の先生でもあるソフィアが必至に守り通して生きていく。
