ベネディクト・カンバーバッチ主演・製作ヒューマンドラマ! 『つぐない』や『追想』の原作者イアン・マキューアンの小説「時間のなかの子供」を映像化。突如、娘が行方不明になった夫婦の悲しみと葛藤を繊細に描く。――児童文学の作家であるスティーヴは、娘のケイトと一緒にスーパーマーケットに買い物へ出掛けた。ところが、店内で少し目を離した瞬間、彼は娘の姿を見失ってしまう。失踪してしまった娘に対する罪悪感に苛まれ、その悲嘆から酒に溺れるスティーヴ。当然、妻ジュリーとの関係も悪化してゆくのだった。彼は教育委員会の仕事に従事するも娘のことがひと時も忘れられず、やがて街中でケイトの幻影を追い求めるようになるのだが・・・。
