Eiko visits Kawada and tells him of Kiku's death, but Kawada cannot call Eiko his daughter due to family reasons and has to send her away. Kawada's wife, Tsuneko, is the daughter of Tajima, his former teacher who is now retired but still a major figure in the world of music composition, and their daughter Yachiyo (Michiyo Kigure) is the daughter Tsuneko had with her lover. Eiko meets Seki ( Toshio Hosokawa ), an up-and-coming composer, and moves in with him at his apartment. Encouraged by Seki and the other residents of the apartment, Eiko enters a competition sponsored by a record company in order to realize her dream.

[松竹映画 銀幕の名花 傑作選] 日本の歌謡映画をリードした佐々木康・高峰三枝子・万城目正トリオの記念すべき第一作。スターを目指す娘二人の話に霧島昇や淡谷のり子らのヒット曲が花を添えている。――声楽家への夢を抱いていた栄子 (高峰三枝子)は、母の死をきっかけに自らの出生の秘密を知る。臨終の母から知らされたのは栄子の父が、作曲界の重鎮・河田武彦であるということだった。栄子は河田を訪ね、きくの死を告げるが、河田は家庭の事情から栄子を娘とは呼べず、追い帰さねばならなかった。河田の妻・恒子は、隠居の身ながら作曲界の大御所として存在する恩師・田島の娘で、娘の八千代 (木暮実千代)は恒子が愛人との間にもうけた娘だったのだ。栄子はふとしたことから新進作曲家の関 (細川俊夫)と知りあい彼のアパートに住むことになる。関やアパートの住人たちに励まされて、栄子は夢を実現するためにレコード会社主催のコンクールに出場することになるのだが・・・若き日の淡谷のり子のほかコロムビアのアーチストたちが多数出演。
