1930年代後半から50年代初頭までは、ビッグ・バンドの全盛期と云われているが、第2次大戦を挟んでいたこともあって、我が国には以外に紹介されていなかった。デューク・エリントンに傾倒し、数々の名プレーヤーと競演するなど活躍したが、モダニアーズ、ニール・ヘフティー、バディ・デ・フランコと云った新人発掘でも知られている。不変のメンバーと云われるほど堅い結束を誇り、大変人望の厚かったレス・ブラウン。ミラー・バンドに在席していたわけではないが、アレンジャーとしてミラー・サウンドをリバイバルさせたR・フラナガン。テナー・サックス奏者兼ユニークなヴォーカリストとして活躍した50年代初等に活躍した4バンドを紹介。
