オーマンディ唯一のシューベルト「ザ・グレイト」・世界初CD化。幅広いレパートリーを誇ったオーマンディだが、シューベルトの交響曲の録音は全4曲・5種類と数少なく、当アルバムにはそのうち、1966年の第9番「ザ・グレイト」と1962年の第4番「悲劇的」が収録されている。1960年代にはウィーン・フィル定期の常連だったことからも判るように、オーマンディはオーケストラを締め付けすぎずにその個性を生かし、その上で自分のもとに引き寄せることのできた指揮者であり、この2曲のシューベルト録音にもその{ゲニュートリッヒカイト}とも呼ぶべき特性が刻み込まれている。「ザ・グレイト」での有機的な響きとスケールの雄大さ、「悲劇的」での緊迫感など、作品の聴きどころを巧みに引き出すオーマンディの手腕が十二分に発揮されている。交響曲第9番「ザ・グレイト」=世界初CD化/交響曲第4番「悲劇的」=日本初CD化。 ■初CD化音源収録 / 録音年: 1966年12月28日、1962年4月8日 /収録場所: フィラデルフィア、タウン・ホール
