The album includes a cover of a song by Climax, a female R&B group that had a string of hits in the 80s and 90s (M2), a famous song that Elise Regina sang as "Samba Da Pergunta" in her 1969 masterpiece "Como y Polque" (M5), and "Nonbignon," which Gretchen also sang on her first album. 前作『フロール』でさらに音楽的、アーティスト的に進化したグレッチェン・パーラトの最新作は、自身が2004年モンク・コンペでウィナーを勝ち取った翌年に発表したデビュー作『gretchen parlato』で、そのアルバム・サウンドの重要なパートを担っていた西アフリカ ベナン共和国出身のギタリスト、リオーネル・ルエケとのアルバム。ハービー・ハンコック、エスペランサ・スポルディング、挾間美帆他と共演し、2012年にはロバート・グラスパーのプロデュース作『Heritage』、さらにグラスパー率いるブルーノート・オールスターズのメンバー (2017)や、ハービー・ハンコック集『HH』 (2020)等でワン&オンリーの存在感を世界中に見せつけているギタリスト。グレッチェンとはセロニアス・モンク・インスティチュート・オブ・ジャズ時代から20年以上にもわたる盟友でもあり、ようやく実現した待望の本格的コラボレイト作品。グレッチェンの深遠ともいえるヴォーカルと抜群のリズム感覚、そしてリオーネルの様々なパーカッシヴ・ギター奏法と、アフリカ南部で特徴的なクリック音を用いるヴォーカルが有機的なアンサンブルとして構築され、現代ジャズ最高峰の音楽的スキルに満ちた内容。レコーディングは2022年3月LA録音。二人はそれぞれパーカッションも演奏、さらにマーク・ジュリアナ (ds, pesc)、バーニス・トラヴィス (b)も参加。愛息マーレー・ジュリアナもヴォイスで3曲参加しており、アフリカ音楽との親和性も高い子供の声を効果的にアンサンブルの一部にしている。収録曲は80～90年代にヒット曲を連発した女性R&Bグループ、クライマックスのカヴァー (M2)、エリス・レジーナが1969年名作『コモ・イ・ポルケ』で「Samba Da Pergunta」として歌った名曲 (M5)、そしてグレッチェンが自身の1stアルバムでもとりあげた「ノンビニョン」 (M8)、さらにフー・ファイターズ97年作『ザ・カラー・アンド・ザ・シェイプ』からのカヴァー (M12)等を収録。二人のオリジナル曲でも、マーク・ジュリアナ他との共作などでは、たゆたうようなアフリカン・グルーヴやブラジル音楽、ジャズ他が一体となった極上の世界を表現している。日本先行発売。
