Sincere yet unrestrained. Weighty yet vivid. This is the masterpiece debut album that captures the moment of breakthrough for the brilliant young pianist Mikio Masuda. Masuda, who came to prominence in the Terumasa Hino Group, delivers his debut album here. The recording personnel are the same as the Hino Group of that period (1974), but with Masuda leading the session, he plays with a lively energy like a fish returned to water. Four of the six tracks are Masuda originals. He dashes through with a light touch one moment, then spins out a beautiful theme with heartfelt intensity the next. The sheer variety of the tunes and the freshness of the playing are simply striking. Among them, the weighty, Afrocentric "Prayer" stands out as a great tune with a great performance, taking a post-Coltrane approach.
