伝えたい"こえ"がある。聞きたい"こえ"がある。 「週刊少年マガジン」に連載され、数々の賞に輝いた大今良時の漫画「聲の形」。このベストセラーコミックが、日本アカデミー賞 優秀賞を獲得した『映画 けいおん!』(11年)など、多くの作品を輩出し続けている京都アニメーションにより新たにアニメーション映画として生まれ変わる。監督はTVアニメ『けいおん!』で初監督を務め、『たまこラブストーリー』(14年)にて文化庁メディア芸術祭 アニメーション部門新人賞を獲得した、京都アニメーションに所属する山田尚子。脚本には『ガールズ&パンツァー』など大ヒットシリーズを手掛ける吉田玲子を迎え、『映画 けいおん!』『たまこラブストーリー』以来のコラボレーションが実現。キャラクターデザインを務めるのは、『氷菓』(12年)、TVシリーズ『Free!』(13年/14年)、『映画 ハイ☆スピード! -Free! Starting Days-』(15年)を手掛けた京都アニメーション所属の西尾太志。痛みから温かさが生まれ、心に刺さる感動を、美麗な映像と共にお届け! ――"退屈すること"を何よりも嫌う少年、石田将也。ガキ大将だった小学生の彼は、転校生の少女・西宮硝子へ無邪気な好奇心を持つ。彼女が来たことを期に、少年は退屈から解放された日々を手に入れた。しかし、硝子とのある出来事がきっかけで将也は周囲から孤立してしまう。やがて五年の時を経て、別々の場所で高校生へと成長したふたり。"ある出来事"以来、固く心を閉ざしていた将也は硝子の元を訪れる。これはひとりの少年が、少女を、周りの人たちを、そして自分を受け入れようとする物語――。
