Isaiah Collier, the saxophonist leading the new generation of Chicago jazz, Isaiah Collier, who leads The Chosen Few, released this album in 2018. It is an early masterpiece in which Collier then just 20 years old vividly established his musical identity, serving as the starting point for his ongoing musical exploration. At the core of the album lies Collier s unique sound, which draws on the lineage of spiritual jazz epitomized by John Coltrane while rooted in Chicago s rich tradition of jazz and improvisational music. On the title track Return of the Black Emperor," the saxophone races freely through the tension created by the heavy rhythm section, piano, and guitar, while War Song" features a fierce and energetic performance; in contrast, I Am Who I Be" and Before You Go," the music reveals introspective moments amidst its power. Furthermore, tracks such as the spiritually resonant Mali," Wade In The Water," which evokes gospel roots, and Heath s Groove," which runs over 12 minutes, demonstrate that the 11 tracks spanning approximately 66 minutes encapsulate the young Collier s wide-ranging musical interests, This album which can be seen as the origin of Isaiah s career, as he would go on to establish a growing presence in the contemporary jazz scene with subsequent releases conveys the strong determination of a young saxophonist who, while carrying on the legacy of post-Coltrane jazz, seeks to update it into the language of his own era.
