『ビタミンF』で直木賞を受賞した小説家・重松清の『希望ヶ丘の人びと』を初めて連続ドラマ化。突然、妻を、母を失った家族が、亡き妻の故郷で四苦八苦しながら新しい生活を築いていく姿を描いた感動作。脚本は、連続テレビ小説『おひさま』を手掛けた岡田惠和、監督は映画『神様のカルテ』の深川栄洋が務める。主演は連続ドラマW初出演の沢村一樹。その妻役にはこちらも連続ドラマW初出演の和久井映見。妻の初恋の人である伝説の不良を寺脇康文が演じる。主人公の娘役は期待の若手女優・桜田ひより、愛らしい息子役は『そして父になる』の二宮慶多が演じる。その他、伊藤かずえ、六角精児、宮川一朗太、やついいちろう、平泉成、といった個性豊かな俳優陣が顔をそろえる。 ――東京都内に住む田島 (沢村一樹)は、妻・圭子 (和久井映見)と、この春で中学2年生になる美嘉 (桜田ひより)、小学3年生になる亮太 (二宮慶多)とともに、幸せな日々を送っていた。しかしある日、圭子の体に末期がんが見つかる。圭子は家族に見守られながら、わずか3カ月でこの世を去ってしまう。家族の太陽だった妻を失い、心にぽっかり穴があいてしまった田島家は、これまでと変わらない日常を過ごそうと無理して笑顔を作っていた。しかし田島は、"忘れようとしたって、無理なんだ"と気付く。そこで、圭子が育った町である「希望ヶ丘」に行き、圭子の思い出をたどって生きていこうと子どもたちに提案する。田島はそこで偶然、圭子の同級生・藤村香織 (伊藤かずえ)に会い、今は空き家となっている圭子の旧家に足を運ぶ。思わず「ここに住まないか?」と言い出す田島に、子どもたちも賛同。こうして田島家は希望ヶ丘での新生活を始めるのだが・・・。
